Fisher Cats aka Fishers are among my favorite animals to photograph. They are incredibly cute and just seem to be very playful. They also have great expressions if you are quick enough to get the photograph before they turn their heads!. Ahh, wildlife photography!

During my most recent wildlife photography workshop in Montana, we had a great time photographing this fisher cat. They are fast and it’s really tough to get the shot before they move on, but with some patience and little bit of luck wonders do happen!

Like I said they look cuddly, but they are fierce predators. Fishers are relatives of wolverines and they have that same tenacity and hunger. Fishers are the only animal that is known  to hunt Porcupines. Wrap your head around that one! They use speed and agility to attack the porcupine in the face until one of them wins…

Fisher Cat Information

Fun Facts

  • are found only in North America
  • diet includes snowshoe hares, rabbits, rodents and birds
  • babies are called kits
  • Length: 3 feet (including 15 inch tail)  Weight: 12 lbs (males); 8 lbs (females)
  • Females are pregnant for 350 days of each year

Collective Noun

There does not appear to be a collective noun specifically for Fishers. But boogle, gang, confusion or pack are used to describe weasels in general. Boogle…really? I might use that just for the weird factor.

I am a bit stumped for a good collective noun for these guys, but with their fierce predatory nature, I think a hunt of Fisher Cats will work nicely!
