Sherman's Fox Squirrel, Sciurus niger shermanii - Jeff Wendorff PhotographerI’ve seen these critters around Florida for years, well I guess glimpsed is a better term. The rare times that I do manage to see them they are skittering back up into there treetop homes… I actually though it was some kind of cat or escaped exotic, because they are huge. From tip of the nose to tip of the tail these squirrels can be almost 40 inches long and weigh over 2 pounds. To put that in perspective, that is 10 to 15 times bigger than the Grey Squirrels you commonly see.

Hopefully, I’ll get to see more of these really cool squirrels. They are not yet on the endangered species list, but the loss of their habitat makes this rather inevitable…BOO!

I photographed the squirrel at Lake Panasoffkee in central Florida. You can see it here on the map. Good luck, and let me know if you “find” more squirrels.
