Raccoons are pretty easy to find and they are very photogenic. If you happen to find a den with babies, the cute factor is huge with those little ones. We are often able to photograph raccoons during my Wildlife Photography Workshops.

Raccoons – Family Procyonidae

The Raccoon, Procyon lotor, sometimes spelled racoon, also known as the Common Raccoon, North American Raccoon, Northern Raccoon and colloquially as coon, is a medium-sized mammal native to North America. The raccoon is the largest of the procyonid family, having a body length of 40 to 70 cm (16 to 28 in) and a body weight of 3.5 to 9 kg (8 to 20 lb). Its grayish coat mostly consists of dense under fur, which insulates against cold weather. Two of the raccoon’s most distinctive features are its extremely dexterous front paws and its facial mask, which are themes in the mythology of several Native American tribes. Raccoons are noted for their intelligence, with studies showing that they are able to remember the solution to tasks for up to three years. The diet of the omnivorous raccoon, which is usually nocturnal, consists of about 40% invertebrates, 33% plant foods, and 27% vertebrates. Read more from Wikipedia.

Raccoons – Collective Nouns

A gaze or a nursery of raccoons seem to be the most common if somewhat unimaginative  collective nouns. I’ve also seen a gaze , a ring and a racket. The winner is of course the obvious, mask of raccoons.

Raccoons – Jeff Wendorff’s Photography Portfolio

I’ve photographed a lot of raccoons and you can see them all, order prints or even obtain usage for your publication. I am particularly fond of this black and white conversion. (click to embiggen)

Raccoons Wildlife Photography Workshops

During my wildlife photography workshops we are often able to photograph raccoons in controlled settings and with very cooperative wildlife models. I have 3 or 4 of these workshops a year and you can get all of the details on Wildlife Workshops, my wildlife, nature and creative digital photography workshop website.
