I had a wonderful expedition to the Galapagos and one of the highlights was being able to photograph the Galapagos Penguin. We saw them a couple of times and as with all bird photography, I could not always get a photograph. We came upon about 6 of them hanging out and mostly napping and that’s how I managed these shots.

Collective Noun

Penguins may be diminutive, but they surely rule the collective noun world!! I was able to find 16 collective nouns for penguins. Some of them (as always) are boring, but I love a formality, a waddle and a tobaganning! Which is your favorite?

  • a colony of
  • a creche of
  • a formality of
  • a huddle of
  • an icing of
  • a march of
  • a muster of
  • a parade of
  • a parcel of
  • a pride of
  • a raft (in water) of
  • a rookery of
  • a shiver of
  • a toboganning of
  • a town of
  • a waddle of

In case you were curious:

  • the third smallest species of penguin
  • it lives further north than any other penguin species
  • was put on the endangered species list in 1970. As of 2010, there were as few as 1,000 pairs in the wild.
