Stalking Jaguar Jaguar Photography Workshop

Jaguars and Wildlife of the Pantanal

Wild Jaguars! Oh my, what an animal and wow, what a trip!

The Pantanal Jaguars and Wildlife Photography Workshop takes you on a wild journey in the world’s most extensive tropical wetlands, the Pantanal of Brazil. This tropical forest is home to some 200 mammals and nearly 500 bird species. If I can say this myself, the Jaguars and Wildlife of the Pantanal one heck of a photography trip.

We will travel by planes, vans, and boats to reach Brazil’s remote and wild Pantanal. We’ll spend time at a very comfortable lodge photographing tons of birds and, if we are lucky Crab-eating Fox and Ocelot. Then we will head deeper into the Pantanal to Jaguar Land! Our next lodge is perched on the banks of the Three Brothers River, it is straightforward and very homey, and it puts in the heart of Jaguar Land. At Jaguar Retreat, we can expect far fewer boats and a more significant number of sightings. The lodge statistics say we should see 6-10 individual Jaguars and as many as 20 sightings! Those are outstanding odds!

You are joining a small private workshop, which means you get all of the help you need with your photography. We also have our own boat, which is very important in creating your best possible images.

I am thrilled to be back in the Pantanal. It will be a pleasure to show you these fantastic cats, and with my help, you will come home with jaw-dropping photos of Jaguars, birds, and wildlife of the Pantanal.

After your arrive in Cuiaba grab your bags and walk across teh street to your hotel for the night. It’s closer than the walk from ticketing to your gate at O’Hare!

We will pick you up at the hotel and begin your Pantanal and Jaguar Adventure. We will be in game drive mode watching for wildlife and birds during the 3-5 hour drive to the lodge.

Once we arrive at the lodge, we’ll have more opportunities for wildlife photography including numerous bird species and the elusive Ocelot.

After a gourmet meal, we’ll go over the details of our following day’s schedule.

Today we will photograph at the lodge feeders and surrounding grounds. We will also look for birds and wildlife by boat. We’ll be get up close of to many birds, caiman, River Otters and more.

As the sunrises we will photograph once more on the lodge grounds. After breakfast we wil drive to Porto Jofre. We will be in an open vehicle so we can photograph anything we may find along the way to our boat.

From Porto Jofre we will search for Jaguars on our boat ride to the amazing Jaguar Retreat Lodge.

After lunch at the lodge we will make another boat ride to look for the Jaguars.

After Dinner we will gather for a group image review. We want to get any issues sorted at the beginning of the trip.

We’ll spend teh next days navigating the river twice a day looking for Jaguars and anything else that we find. We will always be back for lunch and break from the sun.

I will be available for image reviews and advice on what you may want to change.

Camera ready on the boat this morning just in case there is a jaguar or some other worthy subject.

Our safari vehicle awaits and we will photograph our way back to the Pantanal Lodge.

After lunch we’ll explore the grounds and river once more.

What Should I Bring?

For the most part, Pantanal Jaguars and Wildlife Photo Tour is a “big lens” trip. There will be some moments for landscapes and macro, but they are not the norm.

In Jaguar land we will be on fast river boats, and tripods are really not practical. If the outboard motor is on, the vibration will be more than your lens VR can manage, and space is tight for extra long telephotos.

If you photograph a lot of birds then you already know that you “never” have enough lens, so bring your longest lens for the birds.

I highly recommend the Sigma 150-600mm Contemporary. It is perfect for this workshop because it can be handheld and has plenty of range.

On these foreign trips, I always advise clients to bring as many backup devices as practical. You can’t just call B&H and get a new camera sent over. I carry a backup body, charger, batteries, plenty of cards, and a hard drive.

It’s almost impossible to list everything that you’ll need, so just get in touch, and we can talk about what you have and what you might need.

Arrival and Departure Airport

Marechal Rondon International Airport CGB) in Cuiaba. Brazil.

There are two ways to get to the final jumping off point Cuiaba, via Sao Paulo or Brasilia. I personally prefer SP, but that is the easiest for my preferred airline.

Note: When you are looking at return flights make sure that you are returning to Sao Paulo GRU airport and not the local airport CGH

Early Arrival

Let me know if you need help with accommodations if you plan to arrive early. I often spend the night in Sao Paulo to get to Cuiaba in the morning.

We will drop you off at the Cuiaba Airport after our last adventures.

I’ve been very passively advising my clients to purchase travel insurance for a while, but lately it seems like there have been multiple people having travel issues. Some have lost their deposits and sometimes even the cost of the entire trip!

Based on my client’s experience, I cannot stress more strongly how crucial it is to purchase travel insurance. Like I said before, and here it comes again, there is never a way to predict what is going to happen when you are booking trips months and years into the future.

You can read more about my thoughts about the importance of travel insurance in this blog post.
