I’ve been photographing American Badgers at my workshops for a long time now and every time we do, I say to myself, “I’m really tired of these guys!” and every time something cool happens. This summer there was a twist because they had baby badgers for the first time and they were so crazy fun to photograph! OMG, they are cute and photogenic.

I also learned a couple of things. They grow quickly. American Badgers are near their full size in about 4 months. Secondly, they actually are quite friendly and even playful when you raise them by hand. Who would think that!

Interesting American Badger Facts

  • huge fore claws measure 2″ (5cm)
  • weighs up to 8.8 – 26.4 lbs (4-12 kg)
  • born blind and have thin fur on the skin
  • babies are called Kits, Males are boars and females are sows
  • collective nouns for badgers include: cete, colony or a company

I don’t care for those collective nouns and so I declare that a dig should be the new name for a group of American Badgers. What say you?
