I love pelicans and I love this collective noun..perfection. There is an alternate noun, a Squadron, which did fit perfectly for one of the images, but I really had to use pouch. These are Brown Pelicans from Florida and they are now in their brighter breeding plumage. It was a great day at the beach with picture (pun intended) perfect conditions. I got rather lucky when one of them decided to take to the sky right in my direction!
If you would like to order a print and see all of my pelican images you can do that…HERE.
In case you were curious:
- Brown Pelicans are the only species to dive into the water from 30 feet above
- Their pouch is capable of holding up to 3 gallons of water, several times more than their belly
- The present form of pelican has changed very little over the past 30-40 million years
- Size: Body, 5.8 ft (1.8 m); wingspan, 10 ft (3 m)
- Weight: 30 lbs (13 kg)
I was photographing these pelicans at Ft. DeSoto’s North Beach as you can see from this map. It is a great location for bird photography with the spring being particularly productive.[xmlgm ngg_gallery=93]
